Buy or sell: Top stock trading ideas by market experts which are good short term bets

Bears finally and decisively took charge of Dalal Street Thursday with the Nifty50 extending early losses and breaking the psychological 11,300-mark on profit booking.

The index closed sharply lower, forming 'Bearish Belt Hold' pattern on the daily candlestick chart. Weak global cues amid renewed trade war concerns dented market sentiment.

The 50-share NSE Nifty after opening at 11,328.90 which was also an intraday high traded sharply lower to break the 11,300-mark and hit an intraday low of 11,234.95.

The index closed 101.50 points lower at 11,244.70, but the broader markets outperformed frontliners with the Nifty Midcap index rising 0.1 percent. India VIX moved up by 0.45 percent at 12.58. Overall lower volatility suggests that bulls are likely to hold the market on declines near to major support zones.

Here's Why CF Industries Rose as Much as 11.7% Today

What happened

Shares of CF Industries Holdings (NYSE:CF) jumped nearly 12% today after the company announced second-quarter and first-half 2018 earnings. The fertilizer producer achieved record quarterly sales volume, announced a $500 million share repurchase program, and said it still plans on repaying $500 million in long-term debt due by May 2020 (just in case Wall Street thought the share buybacks would conflict with the previous promise).

As president and CEO Tony Will commented:

The story of the first half of 2018 was that of lower North American gas costs and higher nitrogen prices, driving a 33 percent increase in adjusted EBITDA over last year. As we look forward, we expect our cash generation to grow due to a tightening nitrogen supply and demand balance, supported by higher energy costs in other regions of the world. As a result, we will begin returning excess cash to shareholders.

As of 12:09 p.m. EDT, the stock had settled to a 7.5% gain.

A hand picking up the last column of a chart to make it taller than the rest

So what

After years of imbalance in the global fertilizer markets, this was exactly what Wall Street and investors were waiting to hear. Higher production costs in Europe and China tightened supply -- higher coal prices in China led to a 74% drop in urea exports in the first half of 2018 compared to the year-ago period -- and drove prices for nitrogen fertilizers higher in the first half of 2018. That's a trend CF Industries expects to continue in the back half of the year.

The timing should work out pretty well for investors. That's because CF Industries acquired its nitrogen partnership, Terra Nitrogen, in an all-cash transaction in the first few days of April. The acquisition made an immediate impact to the bottom line and will continue to bolster margins and cash flow in the second half of 2018.

Expectations for continued improvement should excite investors, especially considering that second-quarter 2018 gross margin jumped to 24%, up from just 15.4% in the year-ago period, helped by higher selling prices and lower natural gas prices. That drove a 54% increase in adjusted EBITDA in that span, and a 33% increase in the metric between the first halves of the last two years.

Now what

There's a long way to go for fertilizer stocks to make up all the ground that was lost in the last five years or so. However, judging from results around the industry -- and for this nitrogen fertilizer leader specifically -- it seems many businesses have been repositioned to take advantage of slowly improving market dynamics and to be more resilient in the face of uncertainty.

Considering that CF Industries plans to immediately divert improving cash flow toward a $500 million share repurchase program and a $500 million balance sheet makeover by paying off debt, long-term shareholders might have a lot to look forward to.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Invest In Right Now

tags:wh,CPE,CII,PNFP,KLXI,

Susquehanna’s Pablo Zuanic and team note that Keurig’s business in K-cups has been slowing ever since it was bought by JAB, a problem that could be solved in a very convoluted way by a Mondelez International (MDLZ)-Kraft Heinz (KHC) merger. They explain:

Getty Images

Keurigs plight (actually, JABs) is worsening, with the K-cup market slowing to almost no growth now, and Keurig continuing to lose own brands share. Starbucks (SBUX) echoed the notion of a K-cup market slowdown at its seminar on Wednesday (and is guiding for its [consumer packaged goods, or CPG,] growth below recent trends), but it expects to increase its share of total CPG coffee to 20% from 15%. Come early February it will be a year since the closing of the Keurig deal for JAB Holdings. The pressure on JAB is more significant if we take into account the high leverage of the deal (JAB contributed one fourth of the $12Bn price tag). It is a tough predicament. On the one hand we argue that to make that deal work, they need to buy more (own) brands either from the retail channel (that can be extended to CPG: Dunkin (DNKN)? Panera (PNRA)?), or outright buy CPG brands (like the entire Kraft Heinz portfolio, and or Tata Groups Eight OClock brand). But can/how do they fund these deals? Maybe Mars and Warren Buffett (Mars is involved in office coffee with Starbucks), private equity, and or 3G can help? While this note is not about Positive-rated Mondelez, we have mentioned before a scenario where Kraft Heinz buys Mondelez and partly funds the deal by selling its own CPG coffee business (~$3Bn we say) to JAB as well as divests the Mondelez 20% plus stakes in Keurig (North America) and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (Western Europe), which together at this stage are worth ~$7-8Bn. But, yes, JAB will need deep-pocket partners and generous lenders. Net, JAB needs to do something soon.

Hot Growth Stocks For 2019: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chris Lange]

Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN) shares pulled back on Tuesday after the department store chain announced its sales projections for the next five years. Ultimately its targets were not up to par with what Wall Street had in mind.

  • [By ]

Some reasons for my bearishness on retail stocks:

Higher Energy Prices. Oil prices have rallied dramatically and back to 2014 levels, rising from about $35 a barrel in early 2016 to around $67 Thursday. That's bad news for U.S. retailers, as rising oil prices historically squeeze consumer disposable incomes. That's one reason why I've been consistently raising my short exposure to retail and plan to continue doing so. Shaky Same-Store Sales Growth. Recent improvements to same-store sales at Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) , Urban Outfitters (URBN) , Dillard's (DDS) , Gap Inc. (GPS) and Macy's (M) come against downgraded expectations, and might not be sustainable anyway. No Deal for Nordstrom (JWN) . The Nordstrom family has apparently abandoned plans to take its namesake company private. I had expressed concerns that this would happen. Higher Interest Rates. A rise in the London Inter-Bank Offered Rate (LIBOR) has recently accelerated. That's bad news for retailers, as many variable-rate consumer debts (particularly mortgages) key off of the LIBOR. This will likely put a damper on mortgage refinancings -- something that many see as an important ingredient for personal-consumption expenditures.

In the healthcare world, one of those has to be the impressive quarterly report from Intuitive Surgical(NASDAQ:ISRG). The company increased its revenue by 25%, and accelerated its sales of the da Vinci robotic surgical systems that made it famous. But it's not just the expensive hardware that is allowing it to prosper -- it's that every machine needs a steady supply of the disposable instruments and accessories used during its procedures. The Fools consider the recent numbers, the outlook, and the investment thesis for Intuitive Surgical stock. But in the, say, anti-healthcare space, cigarette slingerPhilip Morris International(NYSE:PM) took a big hit as demand slackened in major foreign markets. Sales of its e-cig devices are also not growing the way management had hoped.

Toys R Us mascot starts his second career

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.Geoffrey the Giraffe, the 16-foot-tall fiberglass Toys R Us mascot, has made a move to a new home less than two weeks after the retailer's U.S. toy stores closed their doors.

At one point, the future of Geoffrey about as tall as a real male giraffe was in doubt as the 70-year-old company filed for bankruptcy and liquidated operations, including its corporate headquarters in Wayne, New Jersey.Because of Geoffrey's size and the cost associated with transportation and installation, the company struggled to find someone to buy him.

No one made abid.

As the June 30 deadline to clear out and clean up drew closer, the Toys RUs liquidation adviser, Joseph Malfitanoof Boulder, Colorado, bought the giraffe and paid $10,000 to have Geoffrey packed and shipped the 50 miles here to Bristol-Meyers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Malfitano thought a children's hospital would bean appropriate home for the beloved mascot.

June 24: Game over for Toys R Us! All stores now closed, but is this really the end?
April 24: Toys R Us will live on in Canada, but so far, not in the U.S.
April 17: Billionaire toy maker's bid to save Toys R Us stores rejected

"I was a Toys 'R' Us kid," Malifitano said. "This is an iconic pieceof retail history. For it not to continue to bring smiles for years to come was a shame. This seemed like the right solution. I'm happy to see he has a good home."

Upon hearing of Malifitano's plan, Ken Rosen, an RWJBarnabas Health board member, agreed to donate an additional $6,000 to install the Geoffrey statue in the Bristol-Meyers Squibb Children's Hospital lobby.

"That was no small commitment," said John Gantner, the university hospital's president and chief executive. "I couldn't fithim in the back of my Ford F-150."

On Wednesday, Geoffrey had his official welcome withjungle-themed music, cupcakes and kids.

Nervous about a procedure happeninglater in the day, patient Michael Tiongson, 8, put aside his fears and happily participated in the festivities.

"He's excited now," said Michael's mom, Sherry Stein. "He was very nervous about getting his tonsils and adenoids out. This is a very good distraction."

Geoffrey's original name was "Dr. G. Raffe," so Gantner thought it was appropriate that the giraffe's new residencewas a hospital.

"In our children's hospital, Geoffrey will continue to stimulate the minds and hearts of our littlest patients and briefly replace their fears and apprehension with happy thoughts and some fun," he said.

Rosen, a lawyer at Lowenstein Sandler LLP,did put a condition on his donation: He wants to be able to take a photograph of Geoffrey with his 2- and 5-year-old grandsons.

"I figured if I did this, I would be the coolest person in the world to them," Rosen said.

"What happened to Toys 'R' Us brought a lot of pain to a lot of people. This would bring a lot of happiness to a lot of people," he said. "When I heard about it, I thought it would be particularly nice forthe kids who come to the hospital with a lot of fears and when they see him, he could make them smile."
